First impressions

This day was like stepping into a Swiss fairytale. From the moment I left Zurich early in the morning, I felt the shift—rolling green hills, shimmering water, and a slower rhythm. Even though the skies were cloudy at first, Mt. Rigi revealed its beauty little by little, making the experience even more magical.

Itinerary

Train Zurich-Lucerne: I caught the early train from Zurich and in about 50 min I was in Lucerne. The ride was easy and scenic.

Boat ride to Vitznau: From the station, I walked about 10 minutes to the port and boarded the boat to Vitznau. The ride takes about an hour and was breathtaking—the lake shimmered in the bluest color I’ve ever seen. Gliding across that water felt surreal. On board, there were restrooms and even food service, which made the trip more comfortable. There are different boat routes available, but I chose the direct one with no stops, which gave me more time to enjoy Mt. Rigi. You can buy the  boat tickets here: https://www.lakelucerne.ch/en/

If you can, try sitting on the upper deck, which is first class, for the most open and panoramic views. Even from second class, though, the ride is breathtaking, every angle looks like a painting.

Cogwheel train to Rigi Kulm: As soon as I arrived in Vitznau, the cogwheel train was waiting. I took it all the way to the top to Rigi Kulm. I hiked up to the antenna, and even though it was cloudy at first, by 11 AM the sky began to clear. Slowly, the views of the lake and the Alps opened up—it felt like nature was teasing me with a big reveal.

Snack Stop & Mountain Walk: At the summit, I stopped at the hotel café for a quick snack and restroom break before starting the walk down.

Rigi Kulm → Rigi Kaltbad: The downhill trail was one of the most amazing parts of the trip. Wildflowers lined the path, each labeled with their names—such a charming touch. The views of the lake followed me the entire way. I even came across a curious kitty and a few little snails, which made me smile. It was simple, quiet, and unforgettable.

Cable Car to Weggis: From Rigi Kaltbad, I took the cable car down to Weggis. I’m so glad I did, because the sweeping views from above were breathtaking— it was the perfect contrast to the cogwheel ride up.

Boat Back to Lucerne: Back at Weggis, I hopped on the boat to Lucerne and spent the afternoon exploring the city.

Lucerne Highlights:

Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke): Walking through this historic wooden bridge felt like stepping into the past.

Lion Monument (Löwendenkmal): Hidden in a peaceful park, it’s one of the most moving monuments I’ve ever seen. I treated myself to a banana gelato just in front the entrance of the park, something I had never tried before, and it was absolutely delicious.

Dinner with a View – Hotel Chateau Gütsch: To end the day, I went up to Hotel Chateau Gütsch for dinner. The view over Lucerne at sunset was incredible, and the atmosphere and service were just perfect. It felt like the best way to close such an adventurous day.

Train Back to Zurich: I took the 9 PM train back to Zurich, tired but filled with memories I’ll never forget.

Vibes

Mt. Rigi: Calm, refreshing, and full of natural wonder. A place where time slows down—you feel surrounded by peace, wildflowers, and endless views of the lake and Alps.

Lucerne: Storybook charm mixed with history. Wooden bridges, quiet corners, and the feeling of walking through a postcard-perfect town. Romantic yet relaxed.

Overall: A perfect blend of mountain serenity and lakeside culture—adventure with a gentle, soulful touch.

Food & Drinks

The highlight of the trip was the bar at Hotel Chateau Gütsch, perched above the city, where the food was delicious, but honestly, the view was the main course. Watching the sunset over lake Lucerne with a drink in hand was the perfect finale to a beautiful day.

Vista finds

Best city view: Hotel Chateau Gütsch

Best sweet treat: Banana gelato at Gelateria dell’ Alpi.

Most scenic walk: Mt. Rigi Klum to Rigi Kaltbad following the train rail, it takes around 45 min.
