Quick travel snapshot
Route: Milan→Lake Como
Trip duration:Full day.
Best Time to Visit: Spring to early fall.
Best for: Scenic views, relaxation, romantic escapes, photography.
First impressions
Arriving in Como early in the morning felt peaceful and cinematic. The lake was still, the mountains framed the horizon, and the town had a calm energy before the crowds arrived.
Breakfast by the water, the soft sound of the boats in the distance, and the fresh mountain air made it clear, this day would be special.
Lake Como doesn’t feel rushed. It invites you to slow down, breath and simply take it all in.
Itinerary
I took an early train from Milan to Como, which gave me a full day to explore.
I started with breakfast by the lake at Panini Buono Vista Lago, enjoying a huge cappuccino and a relaxed moment right by the water. Afterward, I walked along the promenade while waiting for my boat tour.
At noon, I boarded a 6 hour private boat tour, which became the highlight of the day. Seeing the lake from the water completely changes the experience; elegant villas, mountain, backdrops, and hidden corners only accessible by boat.
I stopped for lunch at Hotel Villa Aurora in Lezzeno, amore local and relaxed spot where you can also swim in the lake or spend time by the water.

Bellagio:
After Lunch I stopped in Bellagio for about an hour, where I walked through narrow cobblestone streets lined with boutiques and cafés, giving me enough time to do some shopping and eat a delicious gelato.
Even with crowds, every corner in Bellagio feels like a postcard, with the famous stairways, framed by flowers and pastel buildings.

Varenna:
Last stop was Varenna, I spent time walking along the lake and through its charming streets, surrounded by colorful houses and peaceful views.
This town is less crowded that Bellagio, it feels slower, quieter and more intimate.
If Bellagio feels lively, Varenna feels serene, and experiencing both gives a more complete view of Lake Como.
Vibes
Lake Como feels elegant, yet grounded, a place where natural beauty and quiet luxury coexist.
Each stop had its own personality:
Como: calm, classic, welcoming.
Bellagio: Vibrant, colorful, lively.
Varenna: peaceful, romantic and intimate.
The private boat experience added a layer of calm and exclusivity that made the entire day feel effortless and intentional.
Food & Drinks
Breakfast at Panino Buono Vista Lago was simple but memorable, a huge cappuccino, fresh panini, and lake views just steps away.
Lunch at Hotel Villa Aurora (Lezzeno) was one of the highlights of the day. I had risotto with persico, a local favorite, and it was absolutely incredible, fresh, light, and full of flavor.
And of course no Italian day is complete without gelato in Bellagio.

Ilse’s quick tips
– Book boat tours and villa tickets in advance, especially in summer.
– Arrive early to enjoy the lake before the crowds.
– Consider adding the Brunate funicular for amazing views.
– Allow time to slow down, that’s part of the experience.
Final Thoughts
Lake Como was more than just a day trip, it was a reminder to slow down and experience a place beyond the highlights.
From quiet morning moments by the lake to exploring Bellagio’s energy, Varenna’s calm, and ending tyhe day with a sunset on the water, everything felt balanced and intentional.
If you are visiting Milan and looking for a scenic, relaxing escape, Lake Como is absolutely worth it.
✨ Vista insight: I wish I took the funicular in the morning after breakfast, I had plenty of time before my boat tour and there was less people in line. After the boat tour the lines where huge! I guess people wanted to watch the sunset from the top of the mountain.
